The National Trust is a major landowner in Britain - much of its land is of great nature conservation interest. National Trust properties can also be very large (many being over 500 ha) and include "ordinary countryside", too. The Trust therefore has a great responsibility for managing its natural assets - habitats, plants and animals, the environment on which they depend, and the underlying soils, landforms and geology. 20% of its staff across Britain are expert in some expect of nature conservation, and there is an Biological Survey Team.

The Thames and Chilterns Regional Office covers Oxfordshire as well as Bedfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and London north of the River Thames.
