The Chilterns, designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) in 1965, covers 833 sq km. The role of the AONB is to conserve and enhance the flora, fauna, geology, landscape and cultural heritage of the area. In pursuing these objectives the AONB takes an interest in the forestry, agricultural and rural industries in the area, its infrastructure as well as its local communities. It also encourages informal recreation providing this is in balance with the environmental qualities of the area.

The Chilterns Conference was set up as the Joint Advisory Committee for the AONB. It has 35 member organisations (including local authorities) and its role is to develop and co-ordinate relevant policies and action programmes in the AONB
