Natural England

Natural England was established in 2006 as an independent statutory advisory body, to conserve and enhance the natural environment for its intrinsic value, the wellbeing and enjoyment of people and the economic prosperity that it brings.

It provides scientifically based, practical advice on how best to safeguard England's rich natural wealth for the benefit of everyone. It is Natural England's responsibility to see that England's natural
environment can adapt and survive intact for future generations to enjoy.

They work with farmers and land managers; business and industry; planners and developers; national, regional and local government; interest groups and local communities to help them improve their local environment.

Responsibilities include:

  • Promoting nature conservation and protecting biodiversity

  • Conserving and enhancing the landscape

  • Securing the provision and improvement of facilities for the study, understanding and enjoyment of the natural environment

  • Promoting access to the countryside, open spaces and encouraging open
    air recreation, and

  • Contributing in other ways to social and economic wellbeing through
    management of the natural environment.

Geographic coverage:

Both the Cotswolds & Clay Vales team and the Chilterns, North Wessex Downs and Berkshire team together are responsible for Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Berkshire. The staff are based at the Long
Hanborough and Reading offices, as well as the Aston Rowant NNR office.
