The Countryside Agency was established on 1 April 1999 through the merger of the Countryside Commission and the Rural Development Commission. It is the statutory body working to conserve and enhance the countryside; to promote social equity and economic opportunity for the people who live there; and to help everyone, wherever they live, to enjoy this national asset. The Agency leads through research and advice; influencing others, especially central and local government; and demonstrating ways forwards through practical project.
Activities and Services:
At the time of writing, the main activities of the Countryside Agency which are of direct relevance to nature conservation are:
- Millennium Greens
- Grants for local community projects and demonstration projects, including the Local Heritage Initiative
- Administering the Aggregates Levy Fund
- Funding and advising Local Authority projects, for example the Wychwood Project
- Designation and management of National Parks, Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and Heritage Coasts
