County and District Councils

There are five district councils in Oxfordshire, plus Oxfordshire County Council. They all have a responsibility to provide services that are relevant to wildlife, the countryside, and the environment in general. Services of particular interest include:

Planning and Landscape

The development control and local planning functions of district and county councils have a direct impact on wildlife and landscape.

Leisure and Countryside Services

District councils provide opportunities for leisure activities, which include improving and enjoying the countryside. Several districts manage council-owned land for wildlife, have set up nature reserves and provide sensitive public access which promotes the better understanding of the countryside. Since they are responsible for Hedgerow Regulations and Tree Preservation Orders, district councils also employ arboreal experts.

Environmental Services

Environmental Health Officers are responsible for protecting the general well-being of their residents and for improving and safe-guarding the quality of their environment at home and at work. Their activities, such as enforcing health and safety laws which regulate air and water quality, can also have a positive effect on wildlife.

NB The Councils often also work in partnership with local organisations to deliver their nature conservation objectives.
