Campaign to Protect Rural England

CPRE Charity no.: 251925

CPRE aims to protect the countryside from inappropriate development. Nationally it has 43 county branches and 200 district committees covering District Council areas. As a pressure group, CPRE seeks to influence policy makers and planners, in both rural and urban areas, to ensure that sustainability is considered in the use of land and other natural resources. It also monitors the likely impact of new laws and practices in the countryside, e.g. the Hedgerow Regulations, Housing and Transport.

Activities and services:

  • Runs the CPRE Hedgerow Survey. Training provided
  • Comments on county/local plans, and relevant planning applications
  • Runs Conservation in Primary School (CAPS) contest - bi-yearly
  • District Committees monitor local issues and hold various events e.g. visits and talks
  • National office provides advice on application of government policy
  • Runs nature conservation awards section in Best Kept Village Competition
  • Publishes Oxfordshire Bulletin and distributes information to members on national policies affecting the countryside
  • Speakers available - general countryside issues, landscape and history, hedgerows

Geographic coverage:

Oxfordshire Branch covers the whole of the county working through nine district committees using volunteers from its 1500 members.
