The BOS encourages and co-ordinates bird surveys, and is interested in
all aspects of birds and bird recording. It is also active in local conservation
issues, and in the management of six reserves. Meets second Monday in each
month at 7.30 pm at the Banbury Freemasons' Hall, Marlborough Road, Banbury.
Also field trips and regular fieldwork events
Activities and services:
- Basic recording by 1km square plus site code (where applicable) and habitat code
- Computerised database of 100,00 records from 1979, plus earlier records (from 1952)
still to be input
- Annual Breeding Season Survey (ABSS) - 25 species, one per year on a rolling cycle
- Winter Random Square Survey (RSS). 1100 1km squares surveyed over 23 years in February
and November
- Summer Random Square Survey: 1 km squares surveyed in April, May and June
- Domesday Survey: land use of the whole 1200 sq. km
- Local co-ordination of national survey work, e.g. BTO, WeBS, etc.
- Management of reserves at Grimsbury and Bicester and ownership Balscote
Quarry reserve, Glyn Davies Wood, Pauline Flick Reserve and Tadmarton
Heath Reserve.
Geographic coverage: Includes parts of Oxfordshire, Northamptonshire, and Warwickshire (based on Ordinance Survey Grid, twelve 10Km squares: SP32-35, 42-45;
52-55).
